How much should a 2-person backpacking tent weigh?

For a freestanding, double-wall two-person backpacking tent, the realistic packed-weight range spans roughly 3 to 5.5 pounds. The three tents in our comparison cluster tightly between 4.02 and 4.40 pounds –a span of just 6 ounces. That is approximately the weight of an empty Nalgene bottle or a single Clif Bar per day on a 6-day trip.

What most buyers miss: the weight number alone tells you almost nothing about whether the tent fits your sleep system. Kelty Grand Mesa 2P (B082P6RMBC): Publishes both packed weight (4 lb 1 oz / 4.02 lb) and trail weight as manufacturer specifications. This is the highest evidence quality because Kelty explicitly states what each number includes and both numbers come from the brand, not a marketplace field.

Naturehike Cloud-Up 2 (B0DJX7RT3H): Publishes packed weight (4.25 lb) as a manufacturer specification. Includes the footprint in this number, which neither Night Cat nor Kelty does. This makes Naturehike's packed weight slightly higher than it would be without the footprint –but also more honest about what you actually carry.

Unique insight: Night Cat appears to be the "heaviest" at 4.4 lb, but its weight figure is the least reliable of the three. Naturehike appears heavier than Kelty (4.25 vs 4.02 lb), but Naturehike's number includes a footprint that Kelty's does not. The finding that surprises most buyers: The per-person weight difference between the lightest and heaviest tent is just 0.19 pounds (3 ounces). That is the weight of a single energy gel. Across a 50-mile trip, the cumulative weight penalty of choosing the "heaviest" tent over the "lightest" is imperceptible.
